Red Cross launches relief flights to Sudan

The International Committee of the Red Cross has started a major airlift from Geneva to supplement flights departing Nairobi, Kenya, twice weekly to deliver aid and transportation equipment to its operations in Sudan.

On six trips departing Geneva, an Antonov 124 cargo plane will transport 55 trucks, 27 four-wheel-drive vehicles, 10 tent hangars, medical equipment, medicines, water and fuel tanks, spare parts, tires and other supplies weighing about 720 metric tons. The biggest contributor to this cargo is the Norwegian Red Cross.

“Dozens of land convoys will then move most of the equipment and supplies over difficult terrain — made even more hazardous by the ongoing rains — to the three remove Darfuri state capitals,” the Red Cross said.
