Red Hook docks remain open
New York City's plans to close shipping docks in Red Hook, N.Y. by the end of March have been delayed for the time being, according to a report in The Daily News.
The lessee of the docks, American Stevedoring International, had been trying for some time to extend their lease. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey considered evicting ASI in favor of building condominiums, beer gardens and other projects on the property.
Though the port authority has not offered to renew ASI's lease as of yet, they're will be a stay on their eviction. The Daily News reports that at least eight months will pass before there is a hearing on the matter.
American Stevedoring International employs 623 full-time employees. “This is a great victory for the Red Hook Port. The clock has stopped,” said Matt Yate, a spokesman for ASI, to The Daily News.
