Rickmers Linie ship involved in collision, 14 people missing

The vessel “Rickmers Genoa”, operated by Hamburg-based breakbulk, heavy-lift and project cargo carrier Rickmers Linie, collided with South Korean vessel “Sea Cross” in the early morning hours local time Tuesday.

The “Rickmers Genoa” was traveling from Shanghai to Qingdao. Rickmers Linie said that following the collision the “Sea Cross” sank immediately. Two of the “Sea Cross” crew were rescued by crew of the “Rickmers Genoa”, but 13 men from the “Sea Cross” and the chief officer of the “Rickmers Genoa” are missing.

Rickmers-Linie said salvage tugs are attending to the “Rickmers Genoa” to assist putting out a fire that broke out in the forward part of the ship. As soon as the fire is extinguished the vessel will proceed to a suitable port for inspection and repairs, Rickmers Linie said.
