ROADWAY CORP. THIRD-QUARTER NET INCOME DOWN 24.6%

   Roadway Corp., the Akron, Ohio-based truckload and less-than-truckload carrier, said third-quarter net income fell 24.6 percent to $8.2 million.

   Revenue was down 9.6 percent to $631.7 million. Total tonnage fell 13.2 percent, with LTL and truckload tonnage declining at similar rates. Revenue-per ton for the quarter improved 4.1 percent, while operating expenses rose 4.6 percent.

   For the first three quarters, net income slumped 44.8 percent to $17.2 million. Revenue was $1.92 billion, down 7.8 percent.
