RSPA, FMCSA SEEK COMMENT ON HAZMAT RULEMAKING
Two branches of the U.S. Department of Transportation are seeking public comment for proposed rulemaking relevant to transportation of hazardous materials by motor vehicles.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the Research and Special Program Administration are seeking comments on the feasibility of security measures and enhancements under consideration in the conveyance of such materials, and what the resulting costs. Deadline for comments is Oct. 15.
Measures under consideration include: vehicle escorts, vehicle tracking and monitoring systems, and remote shut-offs.
“On several occasions, federal law enforcement officials provided information indicating that terrorist organizations may be planning to use motor vehicles transporting certain hazardous materials for additional attacks on facilities in the United States,” DOT said.
More than 800,000 shipments of hazardous materials occur daily in the United States, about 95 percent by highway, DOT said.
