Samskip ship sinks off Faroe Islands
Six of the 11-man Russian and Latvian crew are still missing from the Samskip hf operated vessel “J'kulfell” which sank just off the Faroe Islands Monday.
Authorities from the Faeroe Islands are leading the search and rescue operation.
It is not known why the ship sunk, Samskip said. An electronic distress signal was picked up from the vessel at about 8 p.m. and approximately two hours later a rescue helicopter spotted the capsized ship.
The “J'kulfell” was loaded with 1,978 tons of construction steel and containers, and had approximately 200 tons of gasoil bunkers on board, Samskip said.
