SAPO orders 53 straddle carriers from Kalmar
South African Port Operations (SAPO), the terminal operating subsidiary of Transnet Ltd. has ordered 53 straddle carriers from Sweden’s Kalmar Industries. Financial details were not disclosed.
Kalmar said the first machines will be shipped from Finland in November. All 53 straddle carriers are scheduled to be in operation at SAPO’s container handling facilities in the ports of Durban, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth by mid-2006.
The order is Kalmar’s second-largest ever behind an order made by SAPO in 2001 for 60 straddle carriers.
