SavannahÆs container volume continues double-digit growth
The Georgia Ports Authority said container volumes at its Port of Savannah have continued their double-digit growth during the first two months of its latest fiscal year.
For July and August Savannah handled 260,790 TEUs, up 14.2 percent over the year-earlier period. In August alone, the port handled 133,320 TEUs, up 12.1 percent over August 2002.
Doug J. Marchand, executive director of the port authority, said the growth is a 'direct result of 10 new services calling on GPA since last year.'
Marchand said five new Asian services boosted Savannah's share of Asian imports among South Atlantic ports to 68.2 percent from 63 percent in its latest fiscal year, ended June 30. Savannah's market share of Asian exports among South Atlantic ports increased to 63.6 percent from 52.7 percent, he said.
