SC Ports breaks cargo records in FY2017

South Carolina Ports Authority saw its throughput jump 10 percent to 2.14 million TEUs during its fiscal year 2017, which ran from July 1 to June 30.

South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) handled a record 2.14 million TEUs in its fiscal year 2017, an increase of 10 percent compared to the previous year’s volumes, according to SCPA data.
The port authority’s previous record, set in FY2006, was 1.98 million TEUs. According to SCPA, June volumes were the highest ever at 183,237 TEUs, allowing the port authority to end its fiscal year, which runs from July 1 through June 30, on a strong note.
Measured in pier containers, SCPA moved 104,101 containers through its two terminals in June. Last month helped to break another record, with the port handling 1.21 million boxes, up from the previous record of 1.13 million in 2005.
“We had a very strong fiscal year, reflective of a capable and hard-working SCPA team and entire maritime community,” said SCPA president and CEO Jim Newsome. “Such growth enables the Port to continue to make the necessary investments in equipment and infrastructure to support the big ships being deployed to the East Coast today.”
In addition to the records made at the port of Charleston, Inland Port Greer saw record rail lifts in June, with 13,060 lifts last month. The facility finished the fiscal year with a record 121,761 moves, an increase of 33 percent compared to 2016, said SCPA.
