Schneider Logistics acquires port trucking, transload operator
Schneider Logistics, a division of $3.2-billion truckload carrier Schneider National, said Friday it plans to acquire American Port Services, an operator of transloading, warehousing and drayage trucking services at six major U.S. ports.
The deal, which is expected to close in 60 days, will make Schneider National the first national truckload provider to offer transloading service for imports, Schneider said.
The acquisition continues the trend of logistics companies trying to offer end-to-end supply chain services to shippers by gaining control of different services rather than outsourcing certain functions. Schneider Logistics derives about 21 percent of its revenues from import business and intends to expand import business as international volume continue to grow, Schneider National President Chris Lofgren said in a conference call with reporters and analysts.
“Linking the inland truckload/deconsolidation, intermodal, and third party capacity of Schneider National with American Port Services’ transloading and port dray operation will create a unique ‘port-to-door’ import logistics service,” Lofgren said in a statement.
American Port Services has facilities in Savannah, Norfolk, Charleston, Houston, Seattle and Long Beach with a combined space of about 5 million square feet. Seventy percent of the space is dedicated for specific customers and the remainder of the space serves multiple customers. George Bowers, president of American Port Services, will continue to lead the company. American Port Services will retain its name and operate as a Schneider Logistics subsidiary.
The company provides cross-docking, deconsolidation, export packaging and crating, kiting and shrink-wrapping and local port delivery services.
Details of the acquisition were not disclosed. American Port Services and Schneider National are privately held companies.
