Sen. Grassley urges China to meet WTO commitments

Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, urged China to meet its commitments under the World Trade Organization.

“I want American farmers and factory workers to know we’re holding China accountable,” he said. “We have to make sure they get the full measure of benefits on which our trade partners agreed. And China needs to do more, especially in agriculture.”

Grassley outlined the trade areas of concern in an Oct. 7 letter to Lu Fuyuan, China’s commerce minister. They include China’s system of transparency, non-tariff barriers, tariff-rate quotas, export subsidies, value-added tax, intellectual property rights, services and currency.

“When China makes decisions behind closed doors, businesses lose their voice,” Grassley said. “That ends up hurting China just as much as U.S. companies.”
