Senate committee okays Peru agreement

The Senate Finance Committee Monday gave its backing to the U.S.-Peru Trade Promotion Agreement.

If the proposal is approved by the full Senate, the Peru agreement will make permanent trade benefits granted to Peru by Congress in 1991 under the Andean Trade Preference Act, said U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab, who applauded the Senate committee's work to approve the agreement.

The committee also approved legislation that would grant permanent normal trade relations (PNTR) to Vietnam.

Commenting on both votes, Schwab said: 'I look forward to working with congressional leaders when lawmakers return from the August recess to bring these measures to the president for his signature.'
