SENSENBRENNER TO DELIVER KEYNOTE SPEECH AT NCBFAA CONFERENCE

The National Customs Brokers and Forwarders Association of America has announced that Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., chairman of the House Judiciary Committee will deliver the keynote speech at the group’s Government Affairs Conference in Washington on Sept. 24.

Earlier this year, Sensenbrenner reintroduced legislation to repeal ocean carrier antitrust immunity. The bill is similar to legislation previously introduced to Congress by former House Judiciary Committee Chairman Henry Hyde, R-Ill.

The new bill, Free Market Antitrust Immunity Reform (FAIR), would remove the ocean carriers’ ability to “fix prices collectively — in cartel fashion — and set other uniform terms and conditions for shipping,” the Washington-based industry group said.

“Chairman Sensenbrenner’s introduction of the bill makes it crystal clear that this legislation remains viable,” said Peter Powell, president of the NCBFAA. “It shows the determination of the House committee with jurisdiction over antitrust matters to bring ocean carriage into the 21st century.”

The NCBFAA said it will continue'its efforts on Capitol Hill'to repeal of carrier antitrust immunity.

“Jim Sensenbrenner is a man of purpose and vision whose legislative actions greatly enhance the NCBFAA’s work to improve and facilitate the transportation logistics sector of this nation’s economy,” said Jon Kent, NCBFAA legislative representative for the NCBFAA. “His presence at our conference in September speaks to the importance of the NCBFAA’s role in the legislative arena.”
