SIU, NMU COMPLETE MERGER
The Seafarers International Union (Atlantic, Gulf, Lakes and Inland Waters District) and the National Maritime Union have completed a three-year effort to merge the two seafaring workers’ unions.
“This merger will benefit not only our membership, but also the entire U.S. maritime industry. It means a more powerful voice for mariners, a stronger manpower pool for national defense and a brighter future. It’s a very positive move,” said SIU President Michael Sacco.
Sacco will remain president of the SIU, while NMU president Rene Lioeanjie will become a vice president at large.
The new organization will have a membership of 33,000.
