Somalia’s seaport reopens after closed for 11 years

Somalia has officially reopened its seaport at Mogadishu after being closed since 1995.

According to an Aug. 23 news report on Aljazeera.net, Somali militia Islamic Courts Union opened the port hoping to restore confidence among commercial vessel operators and shippers.

The port closed 11 years ago when United Nations troops left Somalia amid an escalating civil war.
