South Carolina ports impose security surcharge
Ocean carriers docking at ports in South Carolina will be assessed a security surcharge based on the length of the vessel beginning July 1, according to a new tariff published by the South Carolina State Ports Authority.
A surcharge of $1 per foot will be assessed on vessels calling at the ports of Charleston, Georgetown and Port Royal. The port authority said the fee is necessary to offset the cost of terminal security improvements, some of which were undertaken to meet unfunded, federal maritime security mandates that go into effect this summer.
