St. Lucia plans renewed ties with Taiwan

St. Lucia Foreign Minister Rufus Bousquet said his country is ready to resume ties with Taiwan, which were severed in 1997 by a previous administration, according to an Associated Press report.

The report noted the Chinese Embassy in St. Lucia expressed 'grave concern' about the proposal, and called it 'highly offensive.'

Bousquet said Prime Minister John Compton, who took office in December, had no intentions of ending ties with China.

“The level of our relations in the future would be based on what they consider appropriate under the circumstances,” Bousquet said.
