State Department updates country list for longshore work
The U.S. State Department has updated its list of countries where law or custom prohibit specified activities of longshore work by crewmembers aboard U.S. vessels.
Under a reciprocity provision of U.S. law, crewmembers of ships from countries that allow U.S. crewmembers to perform longshore work are allowed to perform similar work on their ships in U.S. ports.
The updated list goes into effect Jan. 14. Two countries, Estonia and Micronesia, have been dropped from the list because they no longer restrict longshore activities by crewmembers of U.S. vessels.
The revised list includes 24 new entries: Albania, Antigua, Barbados, Brunei, Chile, Cook Islands, Grenada, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lebanon, Maucau, Namiba. Nigeria, Oman, Russia, St. Christopher and Nevis, Singapore, Sudan, Syria, Tonga, Turkey, Tuvalu, United Arab Emirates and Vietnam.
