Staten Island terminal launches intermodal rail service
Intermodal rail service began from Staten Island service on Thursday, as containers were offloaded from the Hapag Lloyd vessel Adrian and placed on rail cars destined for Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit and Chicago.
The service came as New York Container Terminal opened an on-dock rail facility at Howland Hook serviced by the Staten Island Railroad.
Cars will be shuttled between Staten Island and New Jersey, where they will become part of trains operated by CSX to and from the Midwest. Service to and from Norfolk Southern trains is also planned.
The Port Authority said the on-dock facility has the potential to remove 100,000 trucks a year from overcrowded roadways and the Goethals Bridge, which connects Staten Island to New Jersey.
