SUPREME COURT WILL HEAR YELLOW FREIGHT APPEAL
The U.S. Supreme Court has decided to review an appeal from Yellow Freight System involving truck registration fees in Michigan.
Yellow Freight contends that Michigan has overcharged motor carriers passing through the state by requiring a $10 registration fee for each truck.
A 1991 federal law prohibits states from increasing fees. Michigan set its rates a year later, in 1992. Under the previous system, Yellow Freight was exempt from paying anything to Michigan for 3,700 of its trucks registered in Illinois that passed through Michigan.
If the Supreme Court rules in favor of Yellow Freight, Michigan will have to repay the carrier $425,000.
