Tampa takes delivery of gantry cranes
The Port of Tampa has taken delivery of three new gantry cranes for use at its new Hooker's Point container terminal.
The cranes are low-profile, electric Paceco cranes that were purchased from Universal Maritime Service Corp. in New Jersey. Universal Maritime is a subsidiary of APM Terminals.
Port officials said the cranes are a key component of a 10-year plan to expand container handling facilities. Tampa has traditionally been a bulk and breakbulk port, handling commodities like phosphorus and citrus fruits.
'As our business keeps growing, these cranes will ensure we can provide continued efficient service for our customers,' said Wade Elliott, senior director of the port's marketing division. 'Tampa is attracting the increased attention of container lines looking for efficient, uncongested access to our significant local market. Central Florida exporters and importers are very keen to support container shipping services calling at the Port of Tampa.'
Existing container carriers calling Tampa include Zim, Osprey, Tropical Shipping and Seatrade. The Port of Tampa has a 43-foot-deep shipping channel and its container berths have a depth of 41 feet.
