The Daily Dash is a quick look at what’s happening in the freight ecosystem. In today’s edition, we highlight a bill on Capitol Hill that could impact Amazon’s logistics business. We also look at Dynamo Ventures’ latest funding round and more.
The High Five
1. House lawmakers have advanced a bill that could potentially require Amazon to divest its logistics business. The Ending Platform Monopolies Act was debated and passed by the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday by a vote of 21-20. The bill will next be considered by the full chamber. John Gallagher from Washington
2. For more than 30 years, the headline number from the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals’ “State of Logistics” report has been the ratio of business logistics costs to U.S. GDP. The lower the ratio, the more efficient the country’s logistics system. The events of 2020, however, may forever change the core narrative. Mark Solomon’s story
3. Dynamo Ventures, a supply chain-focused seed stage venture capital fund based in Chattanooga, Tennessee, has successfully raised a $43.21 million Fund II. That’s more than double the size of Dynamo’s $18 million Fund I, which it raised in 2016 and has now fully deployed into a portfolio of companies. John Paul Hampstead’s story
4. A planned expansion of the Howard Street Tunnel in Baltimore is closer to fruition now that the project has received additional environmental approvals. State and local leaders hailed the work, which will expand the tunnel to allow for double-stacked container trains, as a way to support growth plans at the Port of Baltimore. Joanna Marsh’s story
5. Third-party logistics company C.H. Robinson’s renewables business has grown 654% in the past three years. The company hopes to help process 14,000 megawatts of energy — “enough solar energy to charge 1.73 million electric cars and enough wind energy to power a city the size of London for four months.” Alyssa Sporrer’s story
