Thomas is new CEO at Ocean Africa

Ocean Africa Container Lines, the African coastal container shipping service jointly owned by Grindrod Ltd. and Safmarine Container Lines, has appointed Andrew Thomas as its chief executive officer.

Thomas was Ocean Africa's marketing and new business development executive. He officially started in the CEO role Nov. 1, replacing David Rennie who will remain on the board of directors.

Rennie assumed additional responsibility for land freight logistics and terminals at Grindrod in the summer as part of a management shakeup with Alan Olivier's formal succession of Ivan Clark as Grindrod's CEO on Jan. 1, 2007.

'My appointment as director in charge of Grindrod Freight Services has seen the need to review the current executive structure at Ocean Africa, leading to the appointment of a new CEO,' Rennie said.

Commenting on the company’s growth and strategy going forward, Thomas said that Ocean Africa has revised its service schedules and increased vessel capacity to cater to growing demand and to counter the impact of congestion in the region’s ports.
