Tideworks, Camco team up on OCR for gates
Tideworks Technology and Camco Technologies, two information technology providers, said today that they have implemented a optical character recognition (OCR) system at pier A in the port of Long Beach.
Cameras housed within an OCR portal capture digital images of container, chassis and tractor license. The data is then fed automatically into the marine terminal’s information system.
Camco Technologies, based in Leuven, Belgium, said OCR significantly reduces the costs of gate operations, and leads to higher operating efficiency. In a joint statement, the IT partners said their OCR system can process more than 500 trucks per hour, per portal, and with accuracy in excess of 98 percent and 95 percent for container number and chassis number, respectively.
“Together we have already begun working to implement the same model at Pacific Container Terminal in Long Beach and we expect more terminals will follow,” said Michael Schwank, president of Tideworks Technology.
