Trade attorneys warn of curtailing of Indonesian transshipments
Trade attorneys from the New York-based law firm Tompkins & Davidson said in an e-mail Monday that the Indonesian Industry Minister, Andung A. Nitimiharja, has gone public with his country’s need to end the transshipment of textiles and garments through Indonesia.
In particular, news report from Indonesia indicate that Nitimiharja has said the government had noted transshipment of textiles and garments from China to Indonesian seaports for re-export to the United States and the European Union, and that such substitution had resulted in serious financial losses for the country’s textile industry.
“The published remarks made to an industry group appear to be designed to push for promised changes in Ministry of Trade procedures,” the e-mail said.
In light of Indonesian government concern, importers of textiles and apparel from Indonesia should anticipate increased scrutiny from Customs and Border Protection in targeting shipments from Indonesia, the e-mail said.
