TSA COMPLETES TIGHT AIRPORT INSPECTIONS
All checked baggage at the 429 commercial airports of the United States are now inspected electronically, the Transportation Security Administration said.
The agency said that it has met the Dec. 31 deadline to screen all checked baggage required in the Aviation and Transportation Security Act.
“With this additional layer of security in place, airports and air travelers are better protected than they have ever been,” said Adm. James M. Loy, Under Secretary of Transportation for Security.
The TSA worked with every airport to develop individual plans for screening all bags using methods set out in the legislation creating the agency.
Before Sept. 11, 2001, only 5 percent of bags were being checked. All checked baggage will now be checked before it goes on an aircraft, with over 90 percent of bags being checked electronically.
