TSA, NIT LEAGUE CONTINUE AIR CARGO SECURITY DISCUSSIONS

National Industrial Transportation League representatives recently held a second meeting with officials from the Transportation Security Administration to discuss enhancing of air cargo security.

“The main objective of this latest meeting was to collect the opinions, thoughts and reactions of air cargo shippers on short- and long-term plans to fulfill the Congressional mandate,” NITL said.

League representatives, led by Jeff Lehman, chairman of NIT League’s air transportation committee, stressed the need for inter-agency coordination, particularly with the U.S. Customs Service, “so that any new security procedures would have a minimal impact on cargo flows.”

One of TSA’s goals, the NIT League said, is an increased participation throughout the supply chain in an effort to bolster security measures pursuant to the “known shipper” program.

Other topics covered include experiences under the “known shipper” concept, redirected shipments, security and employment processes, employee credentials, data confidentiality, rules clarification, and education to industry on the “known shipper” program.

NITL said there would be additional meetings between both groups on other security issues.
