TSA opens fourth round of port security grant program

The Transportation Security Administration is now accepting applications from major ports and terminal operators for grants to enhance security.

The fourth round of funding makes $49.5 million available to help ports meet federally mandated security requirements established after the terrorist attacks on U.S. soil in 2001. The funds can be used for access control, physical security, surveillance, communication systems, and cargo security.

More than $500 million has been allocated in three prior rounds of grant funding. The last round of funding resulted in the selection of 235 awards covering 442 projects. The agency doled out more than $179 million, with grants ranging in size from $2,860 to $3 million.

Applications must be submitted by 3 p.m. June 9. The agency is expected to announce the results of the competitive awards by September.

   Preference will be given to:

   * Security projects that impact a whole port system vs. a single terminal or facility.

   * New installation rather than replacement of existing infrastructure.

   * Projects that enhance intermodal transportation security, including pipelines within the terminal.

   * Projects that address prevention, deterrence and detection vs. post-incident response.

   * Applicants that have made prior security investments at their own expense.
