U.S. awards $381,260 grant to Namibian Airports Co.
The U.S. Trade and Development Agency has awarded a $381,260 grant to the Namibian Airports Co. (NAC) for a study into possible upgrades to operations at the Walvis Bay Airport.
The airport is located at the westernmost node of the Trans-Kalahari Corridor connecting Namibia, Botswana and South Africa. The Namibian government formed NAC in 1998.
The USTDA said Walvis Airport has the potential to serve as “multimodal cargo hub” for port, rail, truck and air freight transported from Southern Africa, Europe and the United States.
The NAC study will consider both short-term and long-term improvements to the airport, such as the runway rehabilitation, cargo terminal development and creation of an industrial park at the airport. The total project is valued at $80 million.
