U.S.-CANADA VENTURE SEEKS TO RESOLVE LUMBER TAX DISPUTE
William E. Brock, former Republican senator from Tennessee and a former U.S. Trade Representative, and James J. Blanchard, a former U.S. ambassador to Canada and former Democratic governor of Michigan, have created the U.S.-Canada Partnership for Growth with the intent of resolving a trade dispute over softwood.
The United States has imposed a 27-percent tax on Canadian softwood lumber imports. According to statement by the partnership, “this tax is damaging the historically close relationship between the two nations and causes economic harm on both sides of the border.”
Brock and Blanchard, who co-chair the partnership, have begun an advertising and grassroots campaign to “resolve issues surrounding the import tax.”
