U.S. Customs’ CSI becomes operational in Malaysia’s Port Klang
The U.S. Bureau of Customs and Border Protection has dispatched a team of officers to Malaysia’s Port Klang to review containers before they depart for the United States.
The Malaysian government signed a declaration of principles to cooperate in the U.S. Customs’ Container Security Initiative on Jan. 20, 2003.
Under the CSI program, U.S. Customs officers will work with their Malaysian counterparts in Port Klang. However, Malaysian Customs officers will be responsible for examining any container identified jointly with U.S. Customs as a potential terrorist risk.
Port Klang is the eighteenth container port to become operational under CSI since the program’s inception in January 2002.
