U.S. CUSTOMS SEEKS INCREASED EXAM TECHNOLOGY FOR SECURITY
A U.S. Customs official said the agency has bolstered security measures at airports and borders and would support new technology to enhance security for a secure and steady flow of cargo across the country’s borders.
Anne Lombardi, deputy executive director of U.S. Customs’ Trade Programs, assured members of the Northern Border Customs Brokers Association at a meeting in Washington on Tuesday that goods are flowing on both borders during the heightened state of security.
“In general, the Southern border has not been a problem,” because the southern border has been sufficiently funded and equipped over the years to combat drug smuggling, she said.
Customs would push for an increase in antiterrorism funding to invite new technology in the process. “We are also looking at new technologies, particularly biometrics, to keep trade flowing, and still monitor border security,” she said.
