U.S. joins Canada and Mexico to harmonize BSE strategy

The U.S. Department of Agriculture joined Canada and Mexico to form a harmonized approach to bovine spongiform encephalopathy risk mitigation to more efficiently deal with the disease risk within North America.

The USDA said this approach will bring the North American BSE strategy in line with the World Organization for Animal Health guidelines.

The report is available on the USDA Web site at http://www.aphis.usda.gov.

“The minimum standards defined in the report have not been codified throughout North America,” USDA said. “Rather, they will be considered by the appropriate animal health and public health officials in each country through their respective regulatory processes. These recommendations do not change the requirements in place for products currently being traded.”
