U.S. Maritime Administration approves deepwater LNG port

The U.S. Maritime Administration has approved the building of a new deepwater liquefied natural gas (LNG) port in the Gulf of Mexico 116 miles south of New Orleans.

El Paso Energy Bridge Gulf of Mexico LLC will construct a terminal to process and transfer natural gas received from LNG ships to a pipeline that will carry the natural gas ashore for distribution to U.S. markets.

“This new facility will eliminate the need for a carrier to come all the way to a shore side port and save money in the process,” said U.S. Secretary of State Norman Y. Mineta.

Energy Bridge Gulf of Mexico is a subsidiary of El Paso Field Services Holding Company, owned entirely by El Paso Tennessee Pipeline Co., which in turn is a subsidiary of Houston-based El Paso Corp.
