U.S. Navy ships destroy Somalian pirate vessel

Two U.S. Navy warships destroyed a pirate vessel in international waters off the coast of Somalia early Saturday morning.

According to the Associated Press, the naval vessels “USS Cape St. George” and “USS Gonzalez,” which were part of a Dutch-led task force, responded to gunfire from a fishing vessel. The AP reported that one suspect was killed, five wounded, and seven others were arrested.

The International Maritime Organization has urged cargo vessels to stay away from the Somalian coast. The United Nations has noted that pirates threaten delivery of food aid to the region.
