U.S. OSHA RENEWS MARITIME ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The U.S. Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration plans to reactivate the charter of its Maritime Advisory Committee for Occupational Safety and Health.

The committee will comprise 15 members from maritime employers and employee organizations, national standards setting groups, federal and state health agencies and professional groups specializing in occupational safety and health. Nominations for the committee are currently being taken.

The Maritime Advisory Committee was originally created to advise the Labor Secretary on issues involving regulations, training and outreach programs. The committee also recommends enforcement initiatives to improve work and safety conditions in the U.S. maritime industry, such as shipbuilding and longshore work.

OSHA announced that it would recharter the committee for another two years in October. For more information, contact the Labor Department’s Office of Maritime Standards at (202) 693-2255.
