U.S. presses WTO members to reach “endgame” Doha document

The Bush administration wants World Trade Organization members to produce an “endgame document” by the end the year to finalize the Doha Round negotiations by 2006.

This endgame document must be ready by the sixth ministerial WTO meeting in Hong Kong later this year, said Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Peter F. Allgeier, in a statement Monday.

“The United States is committed to completing the Doha Round before the end of 2006,” Allgeier said. “We see it as an essential ingredient in a concerted strategy to promote global growth and development for all our economies.

“In particular, we have to be very attentive to important mileposts, to be sure that the work is not lagging,” he added.
