U.S. provides $415,000 port security grant to Lithuania
The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) has awarded a $415,000 grant to Lithuania’s Ministry of Transport and Communication to enhance cargo security at the port of Klaipeda.
The port is undergoing expansion in response to increased cargo traffic. The expansion includes the building of a new container terminal in the Malku area.
During the expansion, increased security measures will be put in place to comply with European Union and International Maritime Organization port security requirements. The Lithuanian government is already planning to upgrade the port’s vessel tracking capabilities and terminal security monitoring systems.
The USTDA said its grant will help the Lithuanian port assess its current and future security needs and recommend improvements. In addition, the grant will fund training for port security officers and other personnel.
