UN SECURITY COUNCIL ISSUES REPORT ON SANCTIONING LIBERIA
The United Nations Security Council in New York has released a ‘white paper’ concerning economic sanctions regarding Liberia.
While most of the “Report of the Panel of Experts” pertains to evidence of alleged illicit trade in diamonds, it also details alleged discrepancies between the amount of funds sent to Liberia by the Liberian International Shipping and Corporate Registry — the Liberian flag register — and the amount shown as being received in official Liberian government records.
The UN said it has concerns that some of the unaccounted-for money might be used to nullify the effect of any economic sanctions.
