UP spends $7.6 million on Minnesota track improvements

Union Pacific Railroad said Monday it is spending $7.6 million this year on track improvements between Comus and Albert Lea, Minn.

Crews began work in April removing and installing 58,000 ties, spreading more than 22,000 tons of rock ballast to ensure a stable roadbed, and replacing the surfaces at 78 road crossings and rail in six curves. The improvements are scheduled to be completed by the end of June.

Union Pacific is planning to spend more than $1 billion in 2005 to maintain its track across the 33,000-mile system.
