UPS board names BTÆs Verwaayen an independent director

   The board of directors of UPS, an Atlanta-based parcel delivery and logistics services company, has elected Ben Verwaayen, chief executive of UPS's BT Group plc in the United Kingdom, as an independent non-executive director.

   Verwaayen, 53, will serve the balance of a term on the board that expires in May. He will stand for re-election at the annual UPS shareowners meeting May 5.

   The BT Group provides information technology, international telecommunications and networking services, including broadband and Internet products and services, in Europe, the Americas and the Asia Pacific region.

   Verwaayen, a Dutch national, has been CEO of BT since February 2002. Previously, he was vice chairman of Lucent Technologies and both president and managing director of KPN, a telecom subsidiary in the Netherlands.
