UPS POSTS 28.5% JUMP IN NET INCOME
United Parcel Service said that net income rose 28.5 percent to $577
million in the third quarter ending Sept. 30.
Total revenue for the quarter increased 9 percent year-over-year to $6.7
billion.
International operating profit improved to $38 million compared to a
quarterly loss of $15 million last year. International revenue grew 10.2
percent to $862 million.
Operating profit from the company’s U.S. domestic package business rose 16.1
percent to $879 million on strong traffic growth. Average daily volume increased 6.8
percent and revenue grew 8.3 percent to $5.6 billion.
In the first nine months of 1998, UPS saw revenue increase 8.2 percent to
$19.6 billion. Net income was $222 million, affected by a $1.442 billion second quarter
federal tax assessment charge related to an overseas package insurance subsidiary. Without
the charge, UPS net income improved 32.2 percent to $1.664 billion from $1.259 billion a
year earlier.
