UPS to build 5 U.S. air freight hubs

Atlanta-based UPS plans to construct five regional heavy air freight hubs at airports across the United States at a cost of about $24 million.

The regional facilities will be in Ontario, Calif.; Rockford, Ill.; Dallas; Philadelphia; and Columbia, S.C. When completed and brought on line next year, they will support a main freight hub to be constructed in Louisville, Ky., home to the company’s main air hub.

Including the hub in Louisville, the six freight facilities will support the heavy air freight business of UPS Supply Chain Solutions, which now includes recently acquired Menlo.

Those airports already serve as regional hubs for UPS’s separate small package network.

The network will support customers with North American overnight, second-day and deferred air freight services.
