USAID donates 31,700 metric tons of food aid to Darfur, Sudan
The U.S. Agency for International Development’s Food for Peace program will donate another 31,700 metric tons of emergency food aid to Darfur, Sudan.
The food aid, valued at $30 million, will be donated to the United Nations World Food Program. The United States is the largest donor to the program.
With this contribution, USAID has provided about 118,400 metric tons, valued at more than $110 million, to fight hunger in Darfur. The agency has also donated 11,400 metric tons for Darfur refugees in Chad, valued at about $9 million.
USAID’s recent donation, which is part of the U.S. government’s P.L. 480 program, will allow for mass shipments of staples, such as corn soya blend, sorghum, split peas, lentils and vegetable oil to Darfur.
