USDA LIMITS ANIMAL IMPORTS IN HAWAII
The U.S. Department of Agriculture said it has officially changed the status of Honolulu, Hawaii, from an animal import center to a 'limited port' for importing animals.
To qualify as an import center, USDA must provide inspection and quarantine services for imports of certain types of animals, birds, poultry products and animal germs.
The Hawaii Animal Import Center closed in 1997 after the Coast Guard base on which it was located, had to be vacated. Hawaii may still handle animal imports that do not require USDA quarantine services.
