USDA to allow imports of South Korea-grown peppers

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service will start allowing imports of South Korea-grown peppers, effective June 21.

The agency said these pepper imports must meet certain conditions. For example, the peppers must be grown in pest-free greenhouses and packed in pest-free shipping facilities.

South Korea expects to export about 250 metric tons of peppers per month, or about 600 40-foot containers a year. “This level of imports is small compared to current levels of production and imports into the United States,” the USDA said.

Mexico, Canada, the Netherlands, and Israel were the major exporting countries for peppers.
