VAN DER JAGT APPOINTED SECRETARY GENERAL OF ESC

Nicolette van der Jagt has been appointed as the new secretary general of the European Shippers’ Council, effective July 1.

She will succeed Chris Welsh, who has moved to the U.K.-based Freight Transport Association to head its campaigns.

Van der Jagt has been the European Shippers’ Council’s policy manager since 1994 and has worked closely with Welsh across all shipper policy issues.

A resident of Brussels, van der Jagt holds a master’s degree in European Studies from the university of Strasbourg and in French and International Relations from the university of Utrecht.

The appointment of van der Jagt also marks a change in the organization of the ESC.

Previously, the secretary general had been employed by the Freight Transport Association, one of the members of the ESC, and seconded to the European organization. Van der Jagt is a full time employee of the European Shippers’ Council.

The ESC has also announced the appointment of Max Philips as its inland transport manager. Philips is currently responsible for rail freight policy issues at the Dutch shippers’ association, EVO, and is the secretary of the newly formed European Rail Freight Customer Platform. He will be seconded to ESC from May 1.

“I am grateful for the huge efforts and successes that were achieved by Chris Welsh in his time as the ESC secretary general,” said Dick van den Broeck Humphreij, a member of the chairmen’s committee of the European organization.

He said that van der Jagt will be working closely with all the national member associations of the European Shippers’ Councils to pursue its policies with the European institutions.
