WALLENIUS WILHELMSEN SIGNS 10-YEAR U.K. TERMINAL CONTRACT
Global automotive logistics carrier Wallenius Wilhelmsen has signed a 10-year deal with Associated British Ports to build a multi-deck car terminal in Southampton, United Kingdom.
Under the agreement, a '3 million ($4.3 million) car-handling terminal will be developed in Southampton’s Eastern Docks. The multi-deck facility at Berth 34 will occupy approximately one hectare, providing almost five hectares of storage on five levels. It is expected to be completed by the end of the year and provide storage for up to 3,120 cars.
Together with existing storage areas, it will increase Wallenius Wilhelmsen's car-handling capacity from 205,000 to 357,000 vehicles a year.
The port of Southampton currently handles up to seven Wallenius Wilhelmsen vessels a week. Wallenius Wilhelmsen's major customers at the port include Land Rover, MG Rover, Jaguar and Gefco (Peugeot) cars, which are exported to the U.S., Asia and Australia, and BMW and Ford cars, which are imported through Southampton.
