Winn-Dixie ditches DCs

The Winn-Dixie supermarket chain announced the closure of three of its 10 distribution centers as part of a downsizing effort that will cut one-third of its stores as the company attempts to emerge from bankruptcy.

The affected distribution centers are located in Atlanta, Charlotte, N.C.; and Greenville, S.C. The company also said it will close a portion of the Montgomery, Ala., distribution center that handles dry groceries and expand the use of the Hammond, La., dry grocery facility to accommodate items now handled by the Montgomery facility.

Winn-Dixie, based in Jacksonville, Fla., said it will try to sell the three DCs, stores and several manufacturing plants also on the chopping block.
